B78 Grossly overrated ability to empathise

 I realised my self assesment of my ability to empathise was grossly over rated. We begin to truly empathise and understand only when its deeply personal.

Two developments related to Covid 19 early today morning made me realise this.
1) The news of the passing away of someone in the immediate circle last night due to Covid 19 in a different city
2) The declaration of containment zone and closing down of the ernakulam market and parts of the city as close as 300 metres from my home hit me squarely on my face.

Till now it was news and now its real .

I can slowly begin to feel what some of my colleagues who are in zones surrounded by 100 active cases within a 1 km radius must be feeling .

B77 Our purpose , the why is deeply personal

 Our purpose ,the why is deeply personal and thats the way it should be.

Everyone in an organisation can have their own unique purposes while still pursuing larger organisational/ shared goals. This needs be respected, embraced and encouraged.

In fact the more unique and personal the purpose is the better for everyone including all the stakeholders.

Three questions that will help people develop clarity on their purpose .
1. Who are the people who are impacted by my actions
2. What difference does it make to them (If i do an excellent vs an average or a poor Job).
3.What difference does it make to me (If i do an excellent vs an average or a poor Job).

Better still if you can get people to reflect and talk about it in their teams.

In tough times like the ones we are all experiencing now , a deep sense of personal pupose is invaluble .

I am convinced that the earlier and faster we choose to change and adapt in all aspects of our life , greater is our probability of survival and success in our business, profession and life .

Nothing is untouchable . Examine every aspect and domain of your life and keep making changes based on your assessment of both external and internal factors and conditions.
